Varicellaria velata (Turner) I. Schmitt & Lumbsch
in Schmitt & al., MycoKeys, 4: 31, 2012. Basionym: Parmelia velata Turner - Trans. Linn. Soc. London, 9: 143, 1808.
Synonyms: Pertusaria conglobata (Ach.) Th. Fr.; Pertusaria obvelata Nyl.; Pertusaria velata (Turner) Nyl.; Variolaria conglobata Ach.
Distribution: C - Sar (Loi & al. 2000, Zedda 2002). S - Camp (Ravera & al. 2021c), Pugl (Nimis & Tretiach 1999).
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, continuous to rimose-areolate, smooth or rugose, whitish grey to yellowish grey, unzoned. Apothecia immersed into 0.5-1.2 mm wide fertile warts, 1(-3) per wart, with an expanded, 0.5-0.7 mm wide, sunken, pink but often heavily white-pruinose disc, and a prominent, persistent smooth or crenulate thalline margin. Epithecium dark brown to black, K-, with numerous crystals reacting C+ red; hymenium colourless, not amyloid; paraphyses slender, lax, branched and richly anastomosing; hypothecium colourless to yellowish. Asci 1(-2)-spored, broadly cylindrical, the apex with a broad ocular chamber, the outer sheath K/I+ blue, otherwise K/I-, Pertusaria-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, fusiform to cylindrical, 130-210(-310) x (28-)40-80(-90) µm, the wall 1-layered, smooth, 8-15 µm thick. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C+ carmine red, KC+ red, P-, UV- or UV+ orange; pruina on the apothecial discs C+ carmine red. Chemistry: lecanoric acid, sometimes lichexanthone. Note: a chemically variable, mild-temperate to humid subtropical lichen found on bark in humid-sheltered situations; certainly rare, and mostly coastal in Italy, where it is known from Sardinia and the Gargano Peninsula, but to be looked for in other parts of the Tyrrhenian ecoregion. It is included in the Italian red list of epiphytic lichens as “Vulnerable” (Nascimbene & al. 2013c).
Growth form: Crustose
