Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, sorediate, typically pale pink, cream-pink, or very pale pink-ochraceous when moist, grey-whitish when dry, up to 0.3 mm thick, rimose in central parts, often areolate in peripheral parts, the marginal areoles sometimes elongate, forming 2-5 cm wide, orbicular, sometimes confluent patches, usually delimited by a conspicuous blackish prothallus. Cortex poorly developed, of colourless hyphae with crystals of erythrin; medulla mostly completely filled with algae and intricate, elongate, 2.5-3.5 μm thick hyphae. Soralia whitish to pinkish, at first punctiform, then confluent in thallus centre, the soredia 25-35 μm in diam. Apothecia extremely rare, immersed to semi-immersed, rounded-ellipsoidal, 0.8-1.2 x 0.4-0.7 mm diam., with a flat, dark brown to black, white-pruinose disc and a thin, often flexuose proper margin surrounded by a soon excluded thalline rim. Proper exciple to 80 μm thick, continuous with the hypothecium, dark brown to black, hyphal walls strongly gelatinized, the inner part brown-olive; epithecium brown to olive, K+ intensifying green, with colourless crystals; hymenium colourless, 110-140 μm high; paraphysoids richly branched and anastomosing, 1.5-2 μm thick, the apical cells not widened or pigmented; hypothecium dark brown, up to 25 μm thick, continuous with exciple. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical-clavate, fissitunicate, Grumulosa-type (Torrente & Egea 1989). Ascospores 8-14-septate, hyaline turning brown when overmature, elongate-fusiform, rarely slightly curved, 35-50 x 4.5-5.5(-6) μm, with a c. 2 μm thick gelatinous sheath. Photobiont trentepohlioid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C+ rapidly and persistently red, KC- or KC+ red, P-. Chemistry: erythrin (major), isoerythrin (minor), plus traces of lecanoric and placodiolic acids and atranorin.Note: this sorediate silicicolous and mainly coastal species of steeply inclined rock faces (in Atlantic Europe also growing on other substrata) is widespread along the Atlantic coasts of Europe, and has been recently found also in the Maritime Alps of France. It often grows together with sorediate forms of Dirina fallax, the two species being difficult to distinguish morphologically and chemically when sterile. To be looked for in coastal Mediterranean Italy.
