Caeruleum heppii (Körb.) K. Knudsen & Arcadia

Distribution: N - Ven (Thor & Nascimbene 2007, Nascimbene 2008, 2008c), TAA (Nascimbene & al. 2022), Lomb, Lig (GDOR 1003). C - Tosc (Benesperi 2007), Marc (Nimis & Tretiach 1999).

Description: Thallus crustose, very thinly episubstratic, continuous to indistinctly rimose-areolate, whitish, pale grey or pale brown, often poorly evident or reduced to a rim surrounding the apothecia. Cortex poorly developed, usually substituted by an epinecral layer; algal layer continuous or of scattered cells. Apothecia lecanorine, at first immersed, then sessile, regularly rounded, 0.2-0.6 mm across, scattered or in small groups, with a brown to red-brown (darker than thallus), concave, smooth disc and a thin thalline margin. Proper exciple colourless or yellow-brown, 10-30 µm thick; epithecium yellow brown, c. 15 µm thick; hymenium colourless, (80-)100-120(-150) µm high; paraphyses slender, 0.5-1 µm wide at base, the apical cells not or only slightly swollen; hypothecium colourless or pale yellow-brown, 10-20 µm high. Asci 100-200-spored, narrowly clavate, with a thin, outer amyloid layer and a thickened tholus penetrated by a pore, the sides of which stain I/KI+ deep blue, approaching the Porpidia-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid, 3-6 x 1.5-3 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: cortex and medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.

Note: an easily overlooked early coloniser of small more or less calcareous pebbles in dry grasslands, which also occurs on concrete and mortar in small settlements, and on walls of calciferous sandstone; certainly more widespread.
