Description: Thallus crustose, grey-white, often poorly evident. Apothecia zeorine, usually crowded, sessile and constricted at base, round to irregular in outline, 0.5-0.8(-1.2) mm across, with a yellow, yellow-orange or brownish-orange, slightly concave to flat disc, and a somewhat paler, thick to finally thin, raised, persistent proper margin. Proper exciple corticate, of radiating hyphae; epithecium yellow-brown, granular, K+ red, C-; hymenium colourless, 80-100 µm high; paraphyses 1.5-2 µm thick at mid-level, the apical cells up to 4 µm wide; hypothecium colourless. Asci (6-)8-spored, clavate, functionally unitunicate, apically thickened with a broad internal beak, the inner part of apex and external cap I+ blue, Teloschistes-type. Ascospores 2-celled, polarilocular, hyaline, broadly ellipsoid to rhombic, 18-21 x 7-10 µm, the equatorial thickening (“septum”) 3.5-4 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-; apothecia K+ red. Chemistry: thallus without lichen substances; apothecia with unidentified anthraquinones.

Note: a poorly-known species with intensely yellow apothecia showing persistently protruding margins; muscicolous, almost exclusively overgrowing Grimmia on acidic rocks; based on a type originating from northern Finland. Most samples of this species in TSB proved to belong to Parvoplaca chelyae, a species described from Macaronesia whose spores have a narrower equatorial thickening. The presence of C. fulvolutea in Italy requires re-confirmation.
