Description: Thallus crustose, thin, continuous, grey-white, with yellowish green, excavated, spindle-shaped to round, up to 0.3 mm wide soralia often delimited by a raised thalline rim, bearing coarsely farinose soredia. Apothecia not uncommon, zeorine, up to 0.5(-0.7) mm across, with a bright orange disc, a yellow-orange, finally often excluded proper margin and sometimes a poorly developed, finally disappearing, grey-white thalline margin. Epithecium orange, K+ red; hymenium colourless; paraphyses simple or branched in upper part, 1-3 μm thick, the upper cells to 6 μm wide; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, clavate, functionally unitunicate, apically thickened with a broad internal beak, the inner part of apex and external cap I+ blue, Teloschistes-type. Ascospores 2-celled, polarilocular, hyaline, broadly ellipsoid, 8-12 x 4-8 µm, the equatorial thickening (“septum”) 3-6 µm (1/3-1/2 of spore length). Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus and soralia K-, C-, KC-, P-: apothecia K+ red. Chemistry: unidentified anthraquinones in the apothecia. Note: a warm-temperate, rather misunderstood but well-distinct species, especially common on the rough bark of isolated trunks of Ulmus and Populus, often along white roads and usually not far from the coast (Vondrák & al. 2009b). It does not belong to Caloplaca s.str.
