Nord. J. Bot., 31: 44, 2013. Basionym: Caloplaca communis Vondrák - Ríha, Arup & Søchting, Lichenologist, 41: 591, 2009.
Synonyms:
Distribution: C - Tosc (Herb. Vondrák 8609), Sar (Vondrák & al. 2009).
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, yellow to yellow-orange, areolate-bullate to minutely subsquamulose, but sometimes consisting of dispersed, coarse granules only. Areoles dispersed or contiguous and then overgrowing each other, forming thick crusts in luxuriant populations, (90-)115-165(-450) μm thick, (0•3-)0.4-1.2(-2•8) mm wide, usually coarsely granular; the granules (70-)120-240(-380) μm in diam. Cortex present, (5-)10-24(-46) μm thick. Apothecia frequent, zeorine, yellow-orange, (0.2-)0.4-0.8(-1.3) mm across, with a slightly concave to flat disc and a rather thick, often crenulated, paler or concolour margin. Exciple (40-)65-135(-210) μm wide, composed by a prominent amphithecium and a parathecium filling c. ⅓–½ of the total width; epithecium orange, granular, K+ red; hymenium colourless, (50-)55-80(-100) μm high; paraphyses simple or sparingly branched, the apical cells to (3-)4-6(-7) μm wide; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical-clavate, Teloschistes-type. Ascospores 1-septate, polarilocular, hyaline, ellipsoid, (10-)11.5-14.5(-18) x (4-)5.5-7.5(-9) μm, the septum (3)4-6(-7) μm thick (c. 0•4 of spore length). Pycnidia yellow-orange. Conidia (2-)2.5-3(-3•5) x 1-1.5(-2) μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus and apothecia K+ red, C-, KC-, P-. Chemistry: thallus and apothecia with parietin (major), fallacinal, emodin, teloschistin and parietinic acid (minor), corresponding with chemosyndrome A of Søchting (1997).
Note: a maritime species of siliceous seashore cliffs, closely related to F. maritima. The sample from Tuscany was collected at Punta Ala near Follonica.
Growth form: Crustose
Substrata: rocks
Photobiont: green algae other than Trentepohlia
Reproductive strategy: mainly asexual, by soredia, or soredia-like structures (e.g. blastidia)
Most common in areas with a humid-warm climate (e.g. most of Tyrrenian Italy)
Taxon bound to maritime-coastal situations
