Description: Thallus crustose, areolate, the areoles starting their development from the very margin, usually directly on the dark prothallus, of very variable shape, size and colour, from flat to strongly convex, from pale ochre to reddish brown, rarely grey or whitish, usually glossy, forming large patches to 13 cm in diam. Cortex 10-25 µm thick; medulla white, I-. Apothecia lecideine, black, slightly constricted at base, located between areoles, up to 1-2.5(-3) mm across, with a flat to slightly convex, sometimes pruinose disc, and a thin, sometimes finally excluded proper margin. Proper exciple blackish brown in outer part, almost colourless within, with many crystals, 40-80 µm wide laterally, C+ red; epithecium olive-green to olive-brown, 10-20 µm high; hymenium colourless, I+ orange in fresh material, I+ blue in herbarium specimens; paraphyses simple to branched and anastomosing; hypothecium dark brown to almost black, up to 250 µm high. Asci 8-spored, narrowly clavate, thick-walled, with a K/I+ pale blue tholus and a strongly amyloid, thin apical cushion, surrounded by a I+ blue outer layer, Lecidea-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid to narrowly ellipsoid, (8-)10-16(-20) x (4-)5-7(-9) µm. Pycnidia dark, immersed. Conidia cylindrical, 6-18 x 1-1.3 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests; thallus K-, C+ red, KC+ red, P-, UV-. Chemistry: gyrophoric acid and variable amounts of lecanoric acid.
Note: a mainly temperate, widespread, extremely variable lichen found on rock faces wetted by rain on a wide variety of substrata, from base-rich siliceous rocks to brick and roofing tiles. According to Aptroot & van Herk (2007), L. grisella is a well-distinct species often growing together with L. fuscoatra. In Southern Italy the degree of morphological variation is surprisingly high (e.g. on the Etna Volcano), with morphologically very different specimens growing side by side; some records, especially from lowland areas of Mediterranean Italy, could correspond to L. grisella.
