Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, granulose to slightly verruculose, usually up to 0.5 mm thick, whitish to grey-green, dull, epruinose, sometimes delimited by a dark prothallus. Medulla white, I-. Apothecia lecideine (0.2-)0.3-0.4(-0.6) mm across, soon sessile, with an initially flat, but soon convex disc and a thin, soon excluded margin. Proper exciple narrow, poorly differentiated, the outer hyphae parallel, moderately swollen and usually strongly brown-pigmented; epithecium brown, N-; hymenium colourless, not inspersed with oil droplets; paraphyses simple to moderately branched, apically swollen, with a brown pigment cap; hypothecium pale to dark brown. Asci 8-spored, clavate, Bacidia-type. Ascospores 1-septate, brown, ellipsoid with obtuse ends, usually slightly curved, not constricted at septum, (8.5-)12-16(-19) x (5-)6-8(-10) µm, Buellia-type, with a smooth wall and ontogeny of type A (apical wall thickenings produced after septum formation). Pycnidia urceolate to globose, unilocular. Conidia short-filiform, curved, 12-15(-20) x 0.5-1 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Note: a very poorly understood taxon; in its present circumscription, an almost cosmopolitan lichen found on a wide variety of substrata, including bark, lignum, siliceous rocks, roofing tiles and brick. The Italian material is very heterogeneous and in need of revision.
Growth form: Crustose
Substrata: rocks, bark, and lignum
Photobiont: green algae other than Trentepohlia
Reproductive strategy: mainly sexual
Poorly known taxon in need of further study
