Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, almost continuous to rimose-areolate, up to 0.5 mm thick, well-delimited, sometimes with a black prothallus when young, pale dirty yellow to dirty yellowish orange, sometimes with a greenish tinge. Cortex cellular, 15-22(-30) µm thick; algal layer continuous; medulla white, paraplectenchymatous Apothecia zeorine, adnate, 0.4-1.3 mm across, with a dark orange to brownish red (paler in young apothecia), flat to convex, epruinose disc, a persistent to usually disappearing thalline margin concolorous with thallus and a proper margin which is usually slightly paler than disc. Proper exciple prosoplectenchymatous, of radiating hyphae; epithecium golden yellow, granular, K+ purple-red, C- or C+ purple; hymenium colourless, 70-100(-120) µm high, not inspersed; paraphyses unbranched or sparingly branched in upper part, the apical cells slightly swollen, up to 3.5 µm wide; hypothecium colourless, not inspersed with oil droplets, prosoplectenchymatous. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical-clavate, functionally unitunicate, apically thickened with a broad internal beak, the inner part of apex and external cap I+ blue, Teloschistes-type. Ascospores 2-celled, polarilocular, hyaline, ellipsoid, (10-)12-18(-20.5) x (5.5-)7-9(-12) µm, the equatorial thickening (“septum”) (3.5-)4-8(-10) µm (1/2-1/3 of spore length). Pycnidia totally immersed, the ostiolar region orange. Conidia bacilliform, 2.5–5 x 1–1.5 μm, Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K+ purple-red, C-, KC-, P-; apothecia C+ purple (reaction often poorly evident). Chemistry: thallus with fragilin (major), emodin, parietin and other anthraquinones (minor); apothecia with predominant parietin and variable, usually low amounts of chlorinated anthraquinones.
