Description: Thallus crustose, generally inconspicuous, immersed to thinly superficial, uneven to warted, sometimes rimose-cracked, pale to dark grey, sometimes delimited by a dark prothallus. Apothecia common, biatorine, up to 1.3 mm across (but forms on twigs may have much smaller apothecia, 0.3-0.5 mm across), scattered to crowded, with a flat to finally convex, red-brown to black disc and an initially thick, finally often excluded, more or less concolorous, smooth to flexuose proper margin (colour of apothecia variable, often darker towards center of discs and with a red tinge towards margin). Proper exciple of the Blastenia-type; epithecium and hymenium patchily yellow-brown, K+ violet-red, C+ purple; hymenium otherwise colourless, 50-80 µm high, not inspersed with oil droplets, amyloid; paraphyses branched, c. 1.5-1.8 µm thick at mid-level, the apical cells thickened, to c. 3 µm wide. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical-clavate, functionally unitunicate, apically thickened with a broad internal beak, the inner part of apex and external cap I+ blue, Teloschistes-type. Ascospores 2-celled, polarilocular, hyaline, ellipsoid, 13-16(-18) x (6.5-)7-10 µm, very thick-walled at poles, the equatorial thickening (“septum”) 3-5 µm (1/5-1/3 of spore length). Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-; apothecia K+ red, C+ purple. Chemistry: chlorinated anthraquinones (chrysophanol, chrysophanal and rhein) in the apothecia (both margin and disc).
