Lecania polycycla (Anzi) Lettau
Hedwigia, 52: 199, 1912. Basionym: Rinodina polycycla Anzi - Comm. Soc. Critt. Ital., 2, 1: 9, 1864.
Synonyms: Lecania amblyospora (Harm.) Zahlbr.; Lecania genevensis (Müll. Arg.) Lettau
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, thin, rimose-granulose, whitish grey, grey-brown to greenish black, rarely demited by a dark prothallus. Cortex indistinct, the upper 5-10 µm pale red-brown, 10-20 µm thick, lacking an epinecral layer; medulla not developed, the algae filling the thallus. Apothecia lecanorine, usually clustered, 0.3-0.6 mm across, with a dark brown to black (pale brown when wet), epruinose, flat to slightly convex disc, and a finally often excluded, whitish grey thalline margin. Thalline exciple clearly lecanorine, corticate, the medulla rich in algae; proper exciple thin to moderately thick, pale to dark brown in outer part, paler within, prosoplectencymatous; epithecium brown; hymenium colourless, 45-55 µm high; paraphyses coherent, branched in upper part, 1.5-2 µm thick at mid-level, the apical cells 4-8 µm wide, with a dark cap of brown pigment on the outer cell wall. Asci 8-spored, narrowly clavate, with a K/I+ blue tholus and a central non-amyloid area, Bacidia-type. Ascospores 1-septate, often slightly constricted at septum, hyaline, ellipsoid, 8-12 x 4-5.5 µm, thin-walled, without a gelatinous perispore. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
