Ochrolechia upsaliensis (L.) A. Massal.
Ric. Auton. Lich. Crost.: 31, 1852. Basionym: Lichen upsaliensis L. - Sp. Pl.: 1142, 1753.
Synonyms: Lecanora parella var. upsaliensis (L.) Ach.; Ochrolechia upsaliensis f. continua Verseghy
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic to partly endosubstratic, but always with some, mostly separate and small, up to c. 0.4 mm wide areoles, white to pale grey, sometimes with a yellowish tinge, usually thick and areolate, the areoles up to 0.7 mm wide, crowded and sometimes ± swollen, rarely thin, flat in most places or folded. Apothecia frequent, lecanorine, sessile, strongly constricted at base, 1-4 mm across, with a pale yellowish to brownish, slightly concave to flat, white- grey- or yellowish-pruinose disc reacting C- and KC-, and a thick, smooth, often flexuose, white-pruinose thalline margin, the pruina granular. Thalline exciple well-developed, thick, entirely white, basally not expanded or partly expanded (character not constant even in a single apothecium), but never vitreous and opaque; proper exciple poorly developed; epithecium brownish, C- (the pruina C+ yellow); hymenium colourless, c. 250 µm high, I+ blue; paraphyses thin, slender, densely branched and anastomosing; hypothecium colourless to most often yellowish. Asci (4-)8-spored, with thick, amyloid walls, without recognizable apical structures, Pertusaria-like. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, of variable shapes, from subglobose to oblong-ellipsoid, thick-walled, (19-)40-75(-80) x (17-)25-35(-40) µm. Pycnidia dark, immersed. Conidia bacilliform. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: cortex and pruina of the apothecia K-, C+ yellow, P-. Chemistry: variolaric acid and variable amounts of substances of the murolic acid complex, sometimes with additional unknown fatty acids.
