Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, areolate, pale to dark grey or brownish grey, delimited by a conspicuous black prothallus, forming up to 6 cm wide patches, the areoles angular to rounded, flat to convex, 0.3-1 mm wide. Cortex with olive-grey-pigmented outer cells, overlain by an epinecral layer; medulla brownish, weakly I+ blue. Apothecia lecideine, black, sessile, slightly constricted at base, 0.4-1 mm across, with a flat to slightly convex, epruinose disc and a thin, usually persistent but sometimes finally excluded proper margin. Proper exciple 35-75 µm wide laterally, expanding to 60-85 µm in upper part, grey to greenish brown in outer part, dark brown within; epithecium dark green, K+ intensifying green, N+ reddish; hymenium colourless to pale reddish brown, not inspersed with oil droplets, 60-110 µm high, I+ blue; paraphyses simple to sparingly branched in upper part, occasionally anastomosing, 1.5-2 µm thick at base, the apical cells slightly swollen and 3-4 µm wide, without a dark cap; hypothecium dark brown, 200-600 µm high, K+ purplish. Asci 8-spored, clavate, tapering at apex into a narrow apical dome, not or weakly I+ blue but ascus apex surmounted with a strongly K/I+ blue cap. Ascospores 1-celled, but appearing 1-septate due to a thickening of the wall in central part, at first hyaline, then soon dark brown with a darker band in the middle part, ellipsoid, thick-walled, 10-15(-18) x 6-8(-10) µm. Pycnidia black, immersed in the thallus. Conidia bacilliform, 3-4 x c. 1 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
