Paulia glomerata Henssen & Tretiach

Synonyms:
Description: Thallus fruticose, black, gelatinous when wet, rarely orbicular, rosette-shaped and attached by a central holdfast, usually consisting of numerous, flattened or globose glomerules attached on conspicuous, elongated, whitish, branched, up to 3 cm long rhizoidal strands, the flattened lobes to c. 4 mm long and 2.8 mm broad, the globose ones to 2 mm across. Hyphae forming a network around the cyanobiont cells, which are penetrated by haustoria. Soredia abundant, especially at the base of the glomerules, globose, naked, 18-35 to 140 μm across. Apothecia rare, to 1.3 mm across, at first immersed then adnate, with a dark brown, urceolate to flat disc, and a c. 0.3 mm thick thalline margin. Proper exciple not developed; hymenium colourless, 120-180 μm high, non-amyloid; paraphyses sparingly branched and anastomosing; hypothecium colourless. Asci (2-)4-8-spored subcylindrical, without apical amyloid structures. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid to subglobose, 10-13(-17) x 9.5-11(-15) μm, the wall c. 1-2 μm thick. Pycnidia rare. Conidia bacilliform, 2.5-3.5 x c. 1 μm. Photobiont cyanobacterial, chroococcoid, the cells surrounded by a colourless to brown (in the peripheral parts of thallus) gelatinous sheath. Spot tests: all negative. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
