Botanik Közlemények, 24: 135, 1927.
Synonyms: Peltidea horizontalis var. lophyra Ach.; Peltigera elisabethae f. complicata Gyeln.; Peltigera mauritzii Gyeln.; Peltigera mauritzii var. stuckenbergiae Dombr.; Peltigera microphylla (Anders) Gyeln.; Peltigera polydactylon f. microphylla Anders; Peltigera polydactylon var. microphylla (Anders) Trass
Description: Thallus foliose, broad-lobed, heteromerous and dorsiventral, loosely attached, 5-15 cm in diam. Lobes elongate, contiguous, with rounded ends, (0.5-)1-2 cm broad and up to 5 cm long; upper surface grey to brown when dry, blackish when wet, shiny, smooth, often with a few conspicuous cracks, the margins crisped, up-turned, often bearing lobules or flattened schizidia. Lower surface without distinct veins, pale at margins, black-brown, sometimes with a few rounded or oval white spots in central parts, with thick, dark, squarrose-fasciculate, 2-3 mm long rhizines arranged in concentric rows. Upper cortex pseudoparenchymatous; medulla white, thick, with loosely interwoven hyphae; lower cortex absent. Apothecia rare, terminal, brown, horizontal, flat, to 9 mm across. Paraphyses simple, distinctly thickened above. Asci 8-spored, fissitunicate, the thickened apex with a K/I+ blue ring, Peltigera-type. Ascospores 3-5(-7)-septate, hyaline to pale brown at maturity, fusiform, thin-walled, 24-45 x 3-7 μm. Photobiont cyanobacterial (Nostoc, the cells not in long chains). Spot tests: Cortex and medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-, or medulla C+ and KC+ pink. Chemistry: two chemotypes, with different combinations of tenuiorin, methyl gyrophorate, gyrophoric acid, zeorin and one or more unidentified triterpenoids.
