Synonyms: Lichen horizontalis var. nebulosus Vill.; Peltidea horizontalis (Huds.) Ach.; Peltigera horizontalis f. lacinulata Gyeln.; Peltigera horizontalis f. scabrida Oxner; Peltigera horizontalis var. muscorum Schaer.; Peltigera horizontalis var. pallidovenosa Savicz & Rass.; Peltigera horizontalis var. ticinensis De Not.; Peltigera horizontalis var. zopfii (Gyeln.) Trass; Peltigera ticinensis (De Not.) Jatta?; Peltigera zopfii Gyeln.
Description: Thallus foliose, broad-lobed, heteromerous and dorsiventral, forming 10-30(-50) cm wide rosettes, bluish- to brownish grey when dry, blackish green when wet, loosely attached. Lobes 1-3 cm wide, up to 5 cm long, flattened, contiguous, with ascending margins, the upper surface glabrous, shiny, smooth. Lower surface pale towards margins, darker in central parts, with a very distinct pattern of rounded to oval, white patches in the spaces between the network of flat, dark brown-black, broad, reticulated veins, with fasciculate-squarrose, 2-3 mm long rhizines arranged in concentrical lines. Upper cortex pseudoparenchymatous; medulla white; lower cortex absent. Apothecia frequent, terminal on short ascending lobes, to 7(-8) mm across, with a brown (rarely finally blackening), horizontal, flat disc. Paraphyses simple, distinctly thickened above. Asci 8-spored, fissitunicate, Peltigera-type, the thickened apex with a K/I+ blue ring. Ascospores 3(-5)-septate, hyaline, acicular, thin-walled, (25-)33-41(-47) x 3-7 µm. Pycnidia dark, immersed. Conidia fusiform. Photobiont cyanobacterial (Nostoc, the cells not in long chains). Spot tests: cortex and medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-, or medulla sometimes faintly and fleeting C+ and KC+ pale pink. Chemistry: two chemotypes, with different combinations of tenuiorin, methyl gyrophorate, gyrophoric acid, hopanes, and unidentified terpenoids.
Growth form: Foliose, broad lobed
