Pertusaria flavida (DC.) J.R. Laundon

Lichenologist, 2: 144, 1963. Basionym: Variolaria flavida DC. in Lamarck & de Candolle - Fl. Franç., 3 éd.: 177, 1815.
Synonyms: Pertusaria fallax var. isidioidea (Schaer.) Anzi; Pertusaria lutescens (Hoffm.) Lamy nom.illegit. non (Eschw.) Kremp.; Pertusaria sorediana Nyl.; Pertusaria wulfenii var. lutescens (Hoffm.) Th. Fr.; Pertusaria wulfenii var. variolosa Fr.
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, more or less continuous when young to cracked-areolate, the areoles finally convex and wart-like, yellowish green to yellowish grey, bright sulphur yellow in sun-forms, pale yellowish grey in shade forms, rarely delimited by a grey prothallus, covered in minute, globose to cylindrical-clavate, 0.1-0.5 mm tall and up to 0.5 mm thick isidia which later sometimes break down apically into granular, pale yellow soredia. Apothecia very rare, perithecioid, immersed in sorediate-isidiate thalline warts (1-5 per wart), appearing as brown punctiform dots. Exciple thick; epithecium pale brown; paraphyses lax, branched and richly anastomosing; hypothecium colourless. Asci (4-)8-spored, broadly cylindrical, the apex with a broad ocular chamber, the outer sheath K/I+ blue, otherwise K/I-, with an inner extensible layer, Pertusaria-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, narrowly fusiform, 60-100 x 25-40 µm, the wall 7-10 μm thick. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K- (rarely K+ yellow turning red), C+ orange, KC+ orange, P- (rarely P+ yellow-orange), UV+ orange. Chemistry: chemotype 1) thiophaninic acid; chemotype 2: thiophaninic acid, stictic acid, variable, usually low amounts of cryptostictic acid, menegazziaic acid and norstictic acid (the most frequent chemotype); chemotype 3): thiophaninic acid, 2'-O-methylperlatolic acid and usually low quantities of norstictic acid.
Growth form: Crustose
Substrata: bark
Photobiont: green algae other than Trentepohlia
Reproductive strategy: mainly asexual, by soredia, or soredia-like structures (e.g. blastidia)
Most common in areas with a humid-warm climate (e.g. most of Tyrrenian Italy)
