Pertusaria rupicola (Fr.) Harm.
Bull. Soc. Sc. Nancy, sér. 2: 32, 1897. Basionym: Pertusaria wulfenii var. rupicola Fr. - Lichenogr. Eur. Ref.: 424, 1831.
Synonyms: Pertusaria fallax var. rupicola f. sterilis Garov.; Pertusaria rupicola var. coralloidea (Anzi) Croz.; Pertusaria sulphurea A. Massal. non Schaer.; Pertusaria sulphurea var. coralloidea (Anzi) Jatta
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, rather thick, yellow-ochre to yellowish green, sometimes delimited by a thin, dark prothallus, either mostly sterile and densely covered by subcylindrical, to 0.5 mm thick and to 2 mm high isidia-like papillae containing a pycnidium, or abundantly fertile and verrucose. Apothecia lecanorine, immersed in 0.4-3.0 mm wide, basally slightly constricted thalline warts, crowded and locally fused (2-4) in mutually deformed groups, at first almost perithecioid, but the disc soon expanding to 0.3-0.6(-1) mm, forming a pseudolecanorate, blackish brown, often grey-pruinose disc. Epithecium dark brown to black, K+ and C+ violet; hymenium colourless; paraphyses lax, branched and richly anastomosed; hypothecium colourless or yellowish. Asci (4-)8-spored, broadly cylindrical, the apex with a broad ocular chamber, the outer sheath K/I+ blue, otherwise K/I-, with an inner extensible layer, Pertusaria-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, broadly ellipsoid, 70-110 x 30-50 µm, double-walled, the wall smooth, 10-15 µm thick. Photobiont: chlorococcoid. Spot tests: K+ yellow, C+ orange, KC+ yellow-orange, P-, UV+ orange. Chemistry: thiophaninic and stictic acids (major), norstictic, and cryptostictic acid (minor or accessory), sometimes with traces of atranorin.
