Synonyms: Gyalecta clausa (Hoffm.) A. Massal.; Gyalecta exanthematica (Sm.) Fr.; Lecidea exanthematica (Sm.) Nyl.; Petractis exanthematica (Sm.) Fr.; Thelotrema clausum (Hoffm.) Schaer.; Thelotrema exanthematicum (Sm.) Ach.; Urceolaria exanthematica (Sm.) Ach.
Description: Thallus crustose, endosubstratic, sometimes hardly visible, dull white, pale grey-white or cream-coloured, often covering large patches. Apothecia more or less immersed in the rock, often leaving a shallow depression when they fall off, 0.4-0.7(-1) mm across, perithecioid when young, later with an orange, pink or orange-brown, flat to concave disc which is initially entirely covered with the pure white exciple, which bears (3-)4-6(-8) distinct radial cracks. Thalline exciple thinner in lower parts, much thicker in upper part; proper exciple very thin, colourless, cupulate or ring-shaped; epithecium poorly differentiated from the hymenium; hymenium colourless or yellowish, >150 µm high, I+ blue; paraphyses simple, 1-1.5 µm thick, the apical cells hardly swollen; hypothecium colourless, very thin, sometimes poorly evident. Asci 8-spored, shorter than the paraphyses, cylindrical, without a distinct apical dome, the wall thin, with a single functional layer, I+ blue. Ascospores 3-septate (very rarely submuriform), hyaline, narrowly ellipsoid, (15-)18-25(-35) x (5-)7-8(-10) µm, surrounded by a well-developed, fimbriate, gelatinous perispore (numbers in brackets refer to measurements including the perispore). Photobiont cyanobacterial (Scytonema-like). Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
