Synonyms: Parmelia caesia var. teretiuscula Ach.; Parmelia pulchella var. dubia (Hoffm.) Schaer.; Physcia caesia var. dubia (Hoffm.) Th. Fr.; Physcia caesitia Nyl.; Physcia dubia var. teretiuscula (Ach.) Clauzade & Cl. Roux; Physcia intermedia Vain.; Physcia lyngei Nádv.; Physcia teretiuscula (Ach.) Description: Thallus foliose, heteromerous, dorsiventral, narrow-lobed, rather loosely adnate, forming irregular, rarely orbicular, up to 3(-5) cm wide rosettes. Lobes (0.5-)1-2 mm wide, whitish grey to dark grey, often paler at margins, mostly epruinose and emaculate, with lip-shaped soralia at the tips of ascending lobes. Lower surface pale, with mostly simple rhizines. Upper cortex paraplectenchymatous; medulla white; lower cortex prosoplectenchymatous. Apothecia very rare, to 2 mm across, lecanorine, with a usually sorediate thalline margin. Epithecium brown; hymenium and hypothecium colourless; paraphyses slender, simple or forked in upper part, the apical cells clavate, with a thin, dark brown cap. Asci 8-spored, clavate, the K/I+ blue tholus penetrated by a faintly amyloid apical cushion with parallel or diverging flanks, the wall K/I-, surrounded by a K/I+ blue outer layer, Lecanora-type. Ascospores 1-septate, brown, ellipsoid, 16-24(-28) x 6-10 µm, the wall thickened at apex and at septum, Physcia-type. Pycnidia rare, immersed. Conidia subcylindrical, 4-6 x c. 1 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: upper cortex K+ yellow, C-, KC-, P- or P+ faintly yellow; medulla K-, C-, KC-, P- Chemistry: upper cortex with atranorin.
Growth form: Foliose, narrow lobed
Substrata: bark and rocks
