Description: Thallus squamulose, pale to dark brown, the squamules 1.5-4 mm wide, 0.25-0.4 mm thick, closely adpressed, sparse to somehow overlapping, flat to weakly convex, rounded or lobulate, the margins markedly darker than the upper surface. Lower surface black throughout, attached by colourless, 4-6 μm thick rhizohyphae. Upper cortex 50-80 μm thick, paraplectenchymatous, with a 20-50 μm thick epinecral layer; medulla of globular cells; lower cortex weakly differentiated from the medulla, the lower cells strongly pigmented. Perithecia pyriform, up to 0.5 mm across, without involucrellum, immersed in the squamules. Exciple colourless, c. 20 μm thick; paraphyses absent, periphyses 25-35 x 2-3 μm. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical, thin-walled, non-amyloid and without an ocular chamber, with uniseriately arranged spores, 65 80 x 11-15 μm. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid, 12-16 x 5.5-7.5 μm. Pycnidia multilocular, Dermatocarpon-type, black, laminal, immersed, up to 0.4 mm across. Conidia oblong-ellipsoid, 3-4 x 1.5-1.8 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: cortex and medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
