Description: Thallus crustose, thinly episubstratic, brownish green to almost black, continuous or cracked, sometimes poorly evident. Perithecia black, globose, at first semi-immersed in the thallus then hemispherically projecting with the shiny upper part, 0.1-0.3(-0.4) mm across. Involucrellum extending to the base of the perithecium, purple-brown (Pseudosagedia-violet pigment), K- or K+ dark grey-brown, HCl+ red-purple to red-brown; exciple dark throughout; hamathecium of mostly simple, 0.5-1 µm thick paraphyses; hymenial gel I-, K/I-. Asci 8-spored, clavate-cylindrical, thin-walled, functionally unitunicate, I-, K/I-, the apex truncate and containing a refractive ring which stains with Congo Red. Ascospores 3-septate, hyaline, fusiform, (13-)16-25(-34) x (3.5-)4-5(-6) μm. Pycnidia black. Conidia oblong-ellipsoid, 2.5-4 x c. 1 μm. Photobiont trentepohlioid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: thallus without lichen substances.
