Description: Thallus crustose, endosubstratic or thinly episubstratic, continuous or rimose, sometimes granular, whitish to ash-grey. Apothecia lecideine, 0.4-0.9 mm across, black, sessile, with a flat to slightly convex disc and a thin, persistent proper margin. Proper exciple reddish brown to reddish violet, of radiating, thick-walled hyphae; epithecium olive-brown, dark greenish brown or violet-brown, N+ violet; hymenium more or less colourless, 50-65 μm high, I+ blue in upper part; paraphyses sparingly branched in upper part, c.1.5 μm thick at mid-level, the apical cells swollen 4-5 μm wide; hypothecium almost colourless to pale red-brown, the pigmented parts K+ reddish violet. Asci 8-16-spored, broadly clavate, surrounded by a gelatinous I+ blue coat, with a well-developed I+ blue tholus with a I+ darker blue tube and a well-developed ocular chamber, Bacidia-type. Ascospores 3(-5)-septate, hyaline, curved, kidney-shaped with rounded ends, 10-18 x 4-5 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: thallus without lichen substances.
