Nat. Arrang. Brit. Plants, 1: 445, 1821. Basionym: Lichen hypnorum Vahl - Fl. Dan., 6, 16: 8, 1787.
Synonyms: Lecanora hypnorum (Vahl) Ach.; Pannaria femsjonensis var. microphylla Anzi nom. nud.; Pannaria hypnorum (Vahl) Körb.; Pannaria porriginosa Vain.; Parmelia lepidora Ach.; Psora deaurata Hoffm.
Description: Thallus crustose to subsquamulose, green-grey to yellowish brown in sun-forms, bright green when wet, thick, areolate-lobulate, the areoles subgranular to mostly subsquamulose, contiguous to imbricate, 0.2-0.5 mm wide, with interspersed, darker, blue-grey to brown, more granular squamules containing Nostoc (cephalodia). Upper and lower cortex paraplectenchymatous, 30-40 µm thick; medulla white, very thin, often indistinct, of loosely reticulate hyphae. Apothecia lecanorine, sessile, up to 5 mm across, with a brown, concave, smooth disc and a persistent, verruculose thalline margin with numerous squamules and sometimes a short white tomentum in the outer, lower part only. Thalline exciple 100-200 µm thick; proper exciple poorly developed, subparaplectenchymatous, 20-25 µm thick; epithecium brownish; hymenium colourless, 100-130 µm high, I+ dark blue; paraphyses simple, submoniliform, up to 4.5 µm thick, the apical cells not swollen; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, narrowly ellipsoid or cylindrical, the apex with a K/I+ deep blue central tube in a paler-staining tholus, and an internal, K/I+ dark blue ring-structure. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid, apiculate at one or both ends, thick-walled, measuring (13-)15-26 x 7-10 µm without the epispore, (19-)22-34 x 8-12 µm with the warted-ridged epispore. Pycnidia rare, pale brown, globose, semi-immersed. Conidia bacilliform, 5-6 x 1-2 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid in thallus, cyanobacterial (Nostoc) in cephalodia. Spot tests: cortex and medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
