Pyrenodesmia alociza (A. Massal.) Arnold

Synonyms: Caloplaca alociza (A. Massal.) Mig.; Lecaniella alociza (A. Massal.) Jatta; Lecanora variabilis f. ecrustacea Nyl.; Placodium variabile var. ecrustaceum (Nyl.) Nyl.; Sporoblastia alocyza (A. Massal.) Trevis.
Description: Thallus crustose, endosubstratic or (rarely) very thinly episubstratic, white to grey, sometimes with a violet tinge, often delimited by a dark prothalline line. Apothecia 0.2-0.8(-1) mm across, often slightly immersed in shallow pits of the rock, with a flat to slightly convex, epruinose or slightly pruinose, black disc and a thin, soon excluded proper margin. Proper exciple brown in outer part, colourless to brownish within, the pigmented parts K+ violet; epithecium grey to brownish (in thick sections), with or without a layer of crystals, K+ violet; hymenium colourless, with scattered crystals and with numerous extracellular oil droplets; apical cells of paraphyses up to 5 μm wide; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, clavate, functionally unitunicate, apically thickened with a broad internal beak, the inner part of apex and external cap I+ blue, Teloschistes-type. Ascospores 2-celled, polarilocular, hyaline, ellipsoid, (11-)15-18(-21) x (6-)7-8(-11) μm, the equatorial thickening (“septum”) 2.5-3(-5) μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K- or K+ faintly violet, C-, KC-, P-, UV-; pigmented parts of apothecia K+ violet and sometimes N+ pale violet. Chemistry: apothecia and sometimes thallus with the Sedifolia-grey pigment.
