Synonyms: Cystocoleus rupestris (Pers.) Rabenh.; Rhacodiopsis rupestris (Pers.) Donk
Description: Thallus minutely filamentous, black to brown-black, forming small tufts which often coalesce into 10-15 cm wide and 0.3-0.5 mm tall, cottony mats. Filaments rigid, straight, not nodulose, 9-15 µm thick, 0.2-1 cm long, consisting of dark brown, regularly parallel hyphae with straight walls (the individual cells appearing rectangular) closely surrounding and adhering to single filaments of Trentepohlia. Apothecia and pycnidia unknown. Photobiont trentepohlioid (the chloroplasts I+ blue-black). Spot tests: all negative. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
