Ramalina calicaris (L.) Fr.
Sched. Crit.: 17, 1824. Basionym: Lichen calicaris L. - Sp. Pl.: 1146, 1753.
Synonyms: Ramalina calicaris var. canaliculata Fr.; Ramalina calicaris var. evernioides (Anzi ex Jatta) Motyka; Ramalina fraxinea var. evernioides Anzi ex Jatta; Ramalina polymorpha var. crispa A. Massal. ex Beltr.
Description: Thallus greenish grey, fruticose, attached by a basal holdfast, at first tufted then long-pendent, to 20 cm long, stiff and hard when dry, the laciniae strap-shaped, sparingly branched, 2-3(-5) mm wide, typically canaliculate, the surface smooth, with punctiform pseudocyphellae. Medulla solid. Apothecia usually frequent, marginal to subterminal, most often originating on the bends of angled branches and bearing a short, pointed spur, lecanorine, with a pale pink-ochre disc and a thin thalline margin. Epithecium pale olive-brown; hymenium and hypothecium colourless; paraphyses thick-walled, richly branched in upper part. Asci 8-spored, the apical dome K/I+ dark blue with a pale, conical-pointed apical cushion (axial mass), the wall I-, but the thin outer gel I+ blue, Bacidia-type. Ascospores 1-septate, hyaline, straight, 10-16 x 5-7 µm. Photobiont: chlorococcoid. Spot tests: medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: cortex with usnic acid; medulla rarely with usually low amounts of substances of the sekikaic acid complex.
