Synonyms: Buellia atroalba (L.) Th. Fr.; Buellia badioatra (Spreng.) Mudd; Catocarpus badioater (Spreng.) Arnold; Catocarpus badioater var. vulgaris (Körb.) Arnold; Lecidea atroalba (L.) Ach.; Lecidea atroalbula Nyl.
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, medium to dark grey-brown, often with a violet tinge, rimose-areolate to areolate-verrucose, usually delimited by a black prothallus, forming up to 10 cm wide (usually less) patches, the areoles flat and scattered to contiguous and bullate, more or less angular, (0.3-)0.6-1.5(-2) mm wide, smooth. Cortex composed of a few cells, the uppermost ones with a dark cap; medulla white, I-. Apothecia lecideine, black, epruinose, 0.4-1(-1.2) mm across, arising between the areoles, round or slightly angular, with a flat to slightly convex disc and a thin, sometimes finally excluded proper margin. Proper exciple narrow, brown-black in outer part, reddish brown within, K+ deep purple-red; epithecium red-brown, sometimes with minute red granules dissolving in K, K+ purple-red; hymenium colourless, (90-)100-120(-130) µm high; paraphysoids coherent, branched and anastomosing, the apical cells capitate; hypothecium brown, K-. Asci 8-spored, clavate, fissitunicate, with a well-developed tholus that is K/I- in lower part and K/I+ blue near the apex, lacking an ocular chamber, Rhizocarpon-type. Ascospores 1-septate, dark blue-green to dark brown, 26-36(-38) x 13-16(-19) µm, halonate. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: medulla K- or K+ yellowish, C-, KC-, P- or P+ pale orange. Chemistry: medulla with or without stictic acid.
