Rhizocarpon saanaense Räsänen
Ann. Soc. Zool.-Bot. Fenn. Vanamo, 16: 61, 1942.
Synonyms: Rhizocarpon fruticosum Räsänen; Rhizocarpon sublucidum Räsänen?
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, areolate, yellowish white, matt, farinose, forming 0.5-3(-5) cm wide patches delimited by a black prothallus, the areoles contiguous, 0.4-2 mm wide, 0.2-0.7 mm thick, usually strictly angular, often with concave sides, flat to slightly convex, sometimes forming a crescent-shaped collar around the apothecia. Cortex poorly differentiated, 20-50 µm thick; medulla white, I+ dark blue. Apothecia lecideine, black, 0.3-0.8(-1) mm across, round to weakly angular, with a flat to slightly convex disc and a thin, often persistent proper margin. Proper exciple (in outer part) and epithecium reddish brown, K+ purple-red; hymenium colourless, 120-160(-220) µm high; paraphysoids coherent, branched and anastomosing, the apical cells clavate; hypothecium brown 100-250 µm high, K-. Asci 8-spored, clavate, fissitunicate, with a well-developed tholus that is K/I- in lower part and K/I+ blue near the apex, lacking an ocular chamber, Rhizocarpon-type. Ascospores muriform, with 12-20 cells visible in optical view, brown, ellipsoid, (25-)28-40(-48) x (15-)17-19(-20) µm, halonate at least when young. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: medulla K-, C-, KC-, P- or rarely P+ faintly reddish-violet. Chemistry: rhizocarpic acid and an unknown substance.
