Rinodina conchophylla H. Mayrhofer & Poelt
Bibl. Lichenol., 12: 85, 1979.
Synonyms: Rinodina violascens sensu Poelt (1975) non H. Magn.
Description: Thallus areolate-subsquamulose, episubstratic, grey, olive-grey or grey-brown, the areoles round or irregularly sublobate, strongly convex, attached at one side, the margin of the other side often ascending and granulose-sorediate. Cortex paraplectenchymatous, with a 15-30 μm thick epinecral layer; medulla white, lax, the lower part with yellowish granules. Apothecia lecanorine, up to 1.2 mm across, originating from flat, esorediate areoles, 1-3 per areole, with a flat to convex, brown-black disc and a thin, persistent to finally excluded thalline margin. Proper exciple laterally thin, slightly thicker in upper part; epithecium reddish brown, K-; hymenium colourless, 100-120 μm high; paraphyses c. 1.5 μm thick at base, the apical cells swollen and to 4 μm thick; hypothecium colourless, to 150 μm high. Asci 8-spored, clavate, the K/I+ blue tholus penetrated by a faintly amyloid apical cushion with parallel or diverging flanks, the wall K/I-, surrounded by a K/I+ blue outer layer, Lecanora-type. Ascospores 1-septate, brown, broadly ellipsoid, 13-19 x 8-11 μm, Bicincta-type, with 2 dark bands above the loculi. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K+ violet (section!), C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: no lichen substances in thallus, except a grey, K+ violet pigment in cortex.
