Description: Thallus crustose, thinly episubstratic, rimose, granulose, or rarely areolate-verrucose, sometimes indistinct but always present around the apothecia, poorly delimited, glaucous, grey or whitish grey, without a distinct prothallus. Apothecia lecanorine, 0.3-0.7(-0.9) mm across, immersed to adnate, usually numerous, with an initially dark brown, then soon black, flat to convex, epruinose disc, and a thin, rarely finally excluded thalline margin. Thalline exciple (45-)60-90 µm wide laterally, with an indistinct, up to 10-20 μm thick cortex reacting I-; proper exciple 10-15 µm thick laterally, expanding to 10-30 µm in upper part, pale brown to colourless, I-; epithecium orange brown to dark brown, K-; hymenium colourless, 70-90(-100) µm high, not inspersed with oil droplets, I+ blue; paraphyses 2-2.5 µm thick at mid-level, the apical cells 5 µm wide, with a dark cap; hypothecium colourless to pale brown, 40-70 µm high, I+ blue. Asci 8-spored, clavate, the K/I+ blue tholus penetrated by a faintly amyloid apical cushion with parallel or diverging flanks, the wall K/I-, surrounded by a K/I+ blue outer layer, Lecanora-type. Ascospores 1-septate, brown, ellipsoid, (13-)15-18(-22) x (6.5-)7-9(-10) µm, Physcia-type, the torus prominent at maturity, the wall ornamented, with ontogeny of type A. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K+ (sometimes faintly) yellow, C-, KC-, P+ faintly yellow or P-. Chemistry: thallus with atranorin.
