Scytinium gelatinosum (With.) Otálora, P.M. Jørg. & Wedin

Fungal Divers., 64, 1: 290, 2013. Basionym: Lichen gelatinosus With. - Bot. Arrang. Veget. Gr. Brit.: 710, 1776.
Synonyms: Collema scotinum (Ach.) Ach.; Leptogium gelatinosum (With.) J.R. Laundon; Leptogium scotinum (Ach.) Fr.; Leptogium scotinum var. sinuatum (Huds.) Torss.; Leptogium sinuatum (Huds.) A. Massal.
Description: Thallus small-foliose to squamulose, slightly gelatinous when wet, brown to dark brown, often paler bluish grey in the basal, less exposed parts, somehow shiny, loosely attached, forming compact 2.5-4.5(-8) cm wide tufts. Lobes (1-)3-4(-5) mm broad, up to 1.5 cm long, 60-135 µm thick, ascending to erect, often imbricate, wrinkled, with entire to irregularly and shallowly crenate margins; lower surface paler, with scattered, whitish hapters. Upper and lower pseudocortex of a single layer of angular, more or less isodiametrical cells, the layer inbetween of intertwined hyphae and loosely arranged chains of Nostoc. Apothecia rather common, lecanorine, adnate to sessile, strongly constricted at base, up to 2 mm across, with a brown, concave to flat, smooth disc and a thick, sometimes concentrically wrinkled thalline margin. Thalline esxciple pseudocorticate; proper exciple euparaplectenchymatous, 10-35 µm wide laterally; epithecium pale brown; hymenium colourless, 115-170 µm high, I+ blue; paraphyses coherent, mostly simple, c. 1 µm thick at mid-level, the apical cells slightly swollen; hypothecium yellowish to pale brown, 10-50 µm high. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical-clavate, the apex strongly thickened, the apical dome K/I+ pale blue, with a downwardly projecting K/I+ deep blue tubular structure. Ascospores submuriform to muriform, with 5-7(-9) transverse septa and 1-2 longitudinal septa, hyaline, broadly ellipsoid to subfusiform, thin-walled, (22-)25-35(-45) x (11-)12-14(-18) µm. Photobiont cyanobacterial (Nostoc, the cells in long chains). Spot tests: all negative. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
Growth form: Squamulose
Substrata: soil, terricolous mosses, and plant debris
Photobiont: cyanobacteria, filamentous (e.g. Nostoc, Scytonema)
