Scytinium schraderi (Ach.) Otálora, P.M. Jørg. & Wedin
Fungal Divers., 64, 1: 291, 2013. Basionym: Parmelia schraderi Ach. - Meth. Lich., Sect. post.: 243, 1803.
Synonyms: Collema bacillare (Wallr.) Wallr.; Leptogium schraderi (Bernh.) Nyl.; Lichen schraderi Bernh. nom. illegit.
Description: Thallus subfruticose, subgelatinous when wet, glossy brown, loosely attached, of subterete, 0.3-1 mm broad, up to 5(-7) mm long, subcylindrical, ascending to erect, heavily wrinkled branches, sometimes with a few dichotomous ramifications in upper part, often forming small tufts, sometimes with a few globular, 0.06-0.1 mm wide isidia. Branches originating from small squamules, which are evident only in very young specimens. Pseudocortex formed by regular layers of angular, c. 5 µm wide cells, the internal thallus parts not paraplectenchymatous. Apothecia rare, lecanorine, subterminal, strongly constricted at base, 0.5-1.5 mm across, with a reddish brown, concave to flat, smooth disc and a thin, but distinct, often granulose or minutely lobulate thalline margin. Thalline exciple pseudocorticate; proper exciple paraplectenchymatous: epithecium brownish; hymenium colourless, I+ blue; paraphyses coherent, mostly simple, the apical cells slightly swollen; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, narrowly clavate, the apex strongly thickened, the apical dome K/I+ pale blue, with a downwardly projecting K/I+ deep blue tubular structure. Ascospores at first 3-septate, then usually submuriform, hyaline, ellipsoid and pointed at both ends (20-)23-30(-35) x (8-)10-13(-15) μm, thin-walled. Photobiont cyanobacterial (Nostoc, the cells in rather long chains). Spot test: all negative. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
