Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, continuous to rimose especially around the perithecia, grey-green (in shade) to brown, greenish black when wet. Perithecia black, forming 0.5-0.7 mm wide projections, often covered by a thalline layer at least in lower half. Involucrellum of pseudoparenchymatous cells, progressively diverging from exciple and reaching the base of the perithecium; exciple dark brown in upper part, paler at base; hamathecium of periphyses and periphysoids, interascal filaments absent; hymenial gel hemiamyloid, I+ red (I+ blue at very low concentrations of I), K/I+ blue. Asci (4-)8-spored, clavate, K/I-, fissitunicate, the wall thickened above, with an ocular chamber, dehiscent by extrusion of an endotunica to form a delicate rostrum. Ascospores muriform, medium brown when mature, rarely dark brown but then the cells still visible, ellipsoid, 50-60 x (21-)24-31 μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
