Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, finely granulose, orange-brown to reddish-brown when fresh, turning grey-green in the herbarium. Apothecia black to brown-black, remaining perithecioid and often considered as true perithecia, half-immersed, often contiguous, 0.5-0.8 mm across, with a wrinkled surface and a slightly depressed apical region. Exciple up to 70 μm wide, brown-black to dark to orange-brown throughout in outer part, colourless or yellowish in inner part, ending in 1-1.5 μm thick, up to 50 μm long periphyses; hymenium colourless, I-, K/I-; hamathecium of thread-like, unbranched, < 2 μm thick paraphyses. Asci 80-150-spored, cylindrical to oblong, tapering towards the apex, the wall thin, I+ light blue, without a tholus. Ascospores 3-septate, slightly constricted at septa, hyaline, spindle-shaped, 11-20 x 4-7 μm, surrounded by a thin gelatinous perispore. Photobiont trentepohlioid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
