Umbilicaria ruebeliana (Du Rietz & Frey) Frey
Hedwigia, 71: 112, 1931. Basionym: Gyrophora ruebeliana Du Rietz & Frey - Hedwigia, 69: 244, 1929.
Synonyms: Omphalodiscus ruebelianus (Du Rietz & Frey) Schol.
Description: Thallus foliose-umbilicate, heteromerous, dorsiventral, monophyllous or more rarely polyphyllous, rigid, more or less orbicular, 1-4(-6) cm in diam., attached by a more or less central holdfast. Upper surface dark brown to black, somewhat paler in central part, distinctly areolate, the areoles 0.5-1.5 mm wide. Lower surface dark brown to black, areolate-verrucose, erhizinate or with very few, sparse rhizinomorphs. Upper and lower cortex prosoplectenchymatous, brown in the outer layer; medulla white. Apothecia common, numerous, black, omphalodisc, 0.2-1 mm across. Epithecium black-brown; hymenium colourless; paraphyses simple or sparingly branched, with enlarged apical cells; hypothecium brown in lower part. Asci 8-spored, clavate, thick-walled, with an amyloid apical dome, Umbilicaria-type. Ascospores 1-celled and hyaline, sometimes turning brown and submuriform when overmature, ellipsoid, 11-13.5 x 6-8.5 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: medulla K-, C+ red, KC+ red, P-. Chemistry: medulla with gyrophoric and umbilicaric acids (major), plus variable amounts of lecanoric acid.
