Usnea glabrata (Ach.) Vain.
Ann. Acad. Sci. Fenn., Ser.A, 4, 7: 7: 1915. Basionym: Usnea plicata var. glabrata Ach. - Lichenogr. Univ.: 624, 1810.
Synonyms: Usnea barbata var. sorediifera Arnold; Usnea florida var. sorediifera (Arnold) Hue; Usnea kujalae Räsänen; Usnea sorediifera (Arnold) Lynge non auct.
Description: Thallus fruticose-filamentous, greenish, tufted and shrubby, 1.5-4(-5) cm long (rarely more), branching sympodially, mainly anisotomic-dichotomously with divergent branches. Main branches somewhat inflated, 0.4-1(-1.5) mm thickd, markedly
articulate and constricted at the point of attachment, often foveolate and sometimes furrowed, not blackened at base. Lateral branches constricted at attachment point, often with annular cracks, the segments distinct, cylindrical to clearly sausage-like, terete to obtuse-angled, with thick apices. Papillae rare to absent; fibrils rare to usually abundant, spinulose, 1-2 mm long, irregularly spread along all branches. Soralia irregular, deeply concave to convex-globular and then efflorescent, occupying more than half the branch diameter (sometimes larger than the branch itself), originating from cortex, sometimes confluent, most abundant on terminal branches; isidiomorphs absent. Cortex shiny in longitudinal section, thin (4-8% of total branch thickness); medulla homogeneous, very loose, white, thick (24-38%); central axis white, thin (18-32%). Apothecia not observed in Italian material. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: cortex K-, C-, P-; medulla K- or K+ brownish or very rarely K+ yellow then red, C-, KC-, P+ orange-red or very rarely P+ yellow. Chemistry: usnic acid in cortex; medulla with protocetraric, fumarprotocetraric, and variable amounts of convirensic acids, very rarely with salazinic and norstictic acids (major) and protocetraric and consalazinic acids (accessory); a third chemotype without medullary substances has been reported from Scandinavia.
