Verrucaria muralis Ach.

Synonyms: Verrucaria subdendritica Servít; Verrucaria submuralis Nyl.
Description: Thallus crustose, endo- to hemiendosubstratic, whitish to brown, usually smooth, without minute brownish flecks. Cortex usually without pigment, or with a dilute brown pigment. Perithecia black, sometimes greyish in lower part but not covered by a thalline layer, forming 0.24.0.5 mm wide, hemispherical to conical projections, the apex rounded to slightly flattened, sometimes shallowly depressed, the base usually not in pits. Involucrellum 50-70(-80) μm thick laterally, reaching down 1/3-1/2 of the perithecium, adpressed to or slightly diverging from exciple; exciple 0.2-0.4 mm wide, the wall colourless to pale brown throughout; hamathecium of 30-60 μm long periphyses, interascal filaments absent; hymenial gel hemiamyloid, I+ red (I+ blue at very low concentrations of I), K/I+ blue. Asci 8-spored, clavate, I-, fissitunicate, the wall thickened above, with an ocular chamber, dehiscent by extrusion of an endotunica to form a delicate rostrum, Verrucaria-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid, (16-)18-25(-27) x (8-)10-12(-14) μm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
