Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, not subgelatinous when wet, whitish, cream-coloured, orange-brown, pale greenish grey to dark greenish brown when dry, more or less greenish when wet, smooth, continuous to rimose, (60-)100-260 μm thick, with a whitish prothallus and/or dark lines separating it from conspecific thalli. Cortex thin, colourless or brownish; medulla paraplectenchymatous, with a distinct, thick, black basal layer which is missing only in the thinner, younger marginal parts. Perithecia entirely immersed in thallus or very slightly projecting, the ostiolar region more or less flattened, visible as a brownish dot (60-130 μm across), or as a ring (60-200 μm across). Involucrellum more or less conical, appressed to exciple in upper part, extending to base-level and widely spreading laterally and contiguous with adjacent involucrella, forming the black basal layer, its cells with distinctly enlarged lumina especially in lower parts, dark reddish-brown, K+ dark greyish brown; exciple (0.1-)0.14-0.27 mm across, the wall c. 10-20 μm thick, usually colourless at base, with a dark brown or dark green pigment around the ostiole; hamathecium of up to 25-30 μm long periphysoids, interascal filaments absent; hymenial gel hemiamyloid, I+ red (I+ blue at very low concentrations of I), K/I+ blue. Asci 8-spored, clavate, I-, fissitunicate, the wall thickened above, with an ocular chamber, dehiscent by extrusion of an endotunica to form a delicate rostrum, Verrucaria-type, 60-85 x 15-25 μm. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, narrowly ellipsoid, (14-)18-25(-28) x 6.5-11(-13) μm, often with a thin perispore. Photobiont chlorococcoid, the cells irregularly arranged or in weakly defined vertical columns. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
