Verruculopsis lecideoides (A. Massal.) Gueidan & Cl. Roux var. lecideoides
in Navarro-Rosinés & al., Bull. Soc. linn. Provence, 58: 174, 2007. Basionym: Thrombium lecideoides A. Massal. - Ric. Auton. Lich. Crost.: 157, 1852.
Synonyms: Catapyrenium lecideoides (A. Massal.) Arnold; Dermatocarpon lecideoides (A. Massal.) Zahlbr.; Verrucaria lecideoides (A. Massal.) Trevis.; Verrucaria lecideoides var. flavovirens Bagl.?; Verrucula lecideoides (A. Massal.) J. Steiner
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, areolate, up to 0.6(-0.8) mm thick, the areoles acutely angular, usually contiguous, flat, 0.2-0.8(-1) mm wide, pale to lead-grey, grey-white pruinose, dull, minutely roughened, the steep side-walls and the margins brown to black. Cortex (pseudocortex) poorly differentiated, paraplectenchymatous, overlain by an amorphous epinecral layer; algal layer filling most of thallus; medulla with at least partially developed black basal layer. Perithecia numerous, marginal or located between the areoles, deeply immersed, the apices 0.2-0.4 mm wide, distinctly flattened and level with surface, resembling an apothecial disc. Involucrellum contiguous with exciple, at first apical, then extending to exciple base and more or less incurved beneath; exciple subglobose, 0.15-0.22 mm wide, the wall dark brown in upper part, paler brown in lower part; hamathecium of periphyses and periphysoids, interascal filaments absent; hymenial gel hemiamyloid, I+ red (I+ blue at very low concentrations of I), K/I+ blue. Asci 8-spored, clavate, fissitunicate and bitunicate, the wall not amyloid, not or only slightly thickened above, Verrucaria-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline rather broadly ellipsoid, (11-)12-15(-16) x 5-7 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
