Synonyms: Athrismidium gelatinosum (Chevall.) Trevis.; Melanotheca gelatinosa (Chevall.) Zahlbr.; Melanotheca leightonii (A. Massal.) Kremp.; Tomasellia leightonii A. Massal.
Description: Thallus crustose, not lichenized, mostly endosubstratic and poorly evident, brownish or reddish brown, sometimes delimited by a dark line. Ascocarps perithecioid, aggregated in circular to ellipsoid pseudostromata with an overlying black wall which is not continuous below the hamathecium. Hamathecium of branched, not anastomosing, non-amyloid pseudoparaphyses. Asci 8-spored, obclavate, tapering to apex, fissitunicate, with two functional wall layers, K/I-. Ascospores 1-3-septate with eusepta, hyaline or finally pale brown, clavate to ellipsoid, 18-27 x 7-10 µm, the wall not ornamented. Photobiont absent. Spot tests: all negative. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
