Baeomyces carneus (Retz.) Flörke

Deutschl. Flecht., 8: 16, 1821. Basionym: Lichen ericetorum var. carneus Retz. - Fl. Scand. Prodr.: 224, 1779.
Synonyms: Baeomyces byssoides var. carneus (Flörke) Hepp; Baeomyces caprinus (Th. Fr.) H. Magn.; Baeomyces fuscorufescens Vain.
Description: Primary thallus crustose to minutely squamulose, grey-green, greenish or brownish green, forming up to 10 cm wide patches, the central part areolate-subsquamulose, the areoles flat to convex, contiguous, 0.2-2 mm long, 0.2-0.7 mm broad, more or less schizidiate or rarely sorediate, the margins crenulate; marginal areoles often elongate, giving the thallus a subplacodioid appearance. Apothecia biatorine, emarginate, up to 2 mm across, with a reddish brown, flat to mostly convex disc, sessile or terminal on short (0.4-4 mm tall), solid, minutely squamulose stipes. Epithecium brownish; hymenium colourless, 65-110 µm high, K/I-; paraphyses slender, simple to sparingly branched in upper part, up to 2.5 µm thick, the apical cells hardly swollen; hypothecium pale. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical, thin-walled, the apex truncated, with a single functional wall layer, with a poorly differentiated, non-amyloid tholus. Ascospores 1(-2)-celled, hyaline, fusiform, 8-11(-15) x 2-4.5(-8) µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K+ yellow turning red, C-, KC+ red, P+ orange, UV-; apothecial disc C+ red, K+ rapidly blood-red. Chemistry: norstictic and connorstictic acids; gyrophoric and lecanoric acids in mature apothecia.
