Synonyms: Lecanora castanea (Hepp) Th. Fr.; Lecanora castanea var. septata Arnold
Description: Thallus crustose, whitish, grey or brownish, thin, continuous to rarely granulose, often indistinct. Cortex with crystals arranged in anticlinal rows, visible under polarized light; medulla white, I-. Apothecia zeorine (appearing lecideine), sessile and constricted at base, 0.5-2(-3) mm across, with a dark reddish brown, initially concave then flat, rarely faintly pruinose disc, and a concolorous or slightly paler, thick, crenulate-undulate margin. Thalline exciple cupular, reddish brown in outer part, colourless within, not inspersed with granules; proper exciple poorly developed; epithecium reddish or yellowish brown, K-, N-; hymenium colourless, 50-70 µm high, K/I+ blue; paraphyses simple, coherent, 1.5-2.5 µm thick at mid-level, the apical cells 3-5 µm wide; hypothecium pale brown to almost colourless, 50-60 µm high. Asci 8-spored, clavate, the K/I+ blue tholus penetrated by a faintly amyloid apical cushion with parallel or diverging flanks, the wall K/I-, surrounded by a K/I+ blue outer layer, Lecanora-type. Ascospores 1-celled (rarely 1-2-septate), hyaline, ellipsoid-cylindrical, thick-walled, (12-)14-25(-31) x (5-)5.5-7.5(-10) µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K+ yellow then red (needle-like crystals, visible in a section under the microscope), C-, KC-, P- or P+ pale yellow; medulla UV-. Chemistry: norstictic acid.
