Description: Thallus crustose, endosubstratic, continuous, violet grey to grey with tiny brown flecks, often delimited by dark prothalline lines. Perithecia black, c. 70-80/cm2, 0.25-0.5(-0.6) mm across, 1/2 to 3/4 immersed in the rock and leaving deep pits when they fall off, the projecting part usually flattened to concave. Involucrellum 60-80 µm thick, dimidiate; exciple c. 0.25 mm across, dark throughout; hamathecium of periphysoids measuring 35-50 x 2-2.5 µm, interascal filaments absent; hymenial gel hemiamyloid, I+ red (I+ blue at very low concentrations of I), K/I+ blue. Asci 8-spored, clavate, fissitunicate, the wall not amyloid, not or only slightly thickened above, Verrucaria-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid, (25-)28-35(-39) x 12-15(-17) µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
