Leptogium cyanescens (Ach.) Körb.
Syst. Lich. Germ.: 420, 1855. Basionym: Collema tremelloides f. cyanescens Ach. - Syn. Meth. Lich.: 326, 1814.
Synonyms: Leptogium caesium (Ach.) Vain.
Description: Thallus foliose, subgelatinous when wet, closely to loosely adnate, 1-5(-10) cm wide, the lobes irregular, elongate, flat, separate, 4-5(-10) mm wide, papery thin when dry, (35-)70-100(-120) µm thick when wet, entire, dentate to irregularly cut, with rotund apices, isidiate. Upper surface blue-grey, smooth to somewhat wrinkled, with dense, laminal to marginal, usually cylindrical, simple to eventually branched, sometimes flattened isidia. Lower surface grey, smooth, with scattered tufts of white hapters but not densely tomentose. Upper and lower cortices consisting of a single layer of isodiametrical, 5-8 µm wide cells, internally with loosely interwoven chains of Nostoc and hyphae. Apothecia rare, lecanorine, laminal, sessile to substipitate, 0.5-2 mm across, with a brown disc and an often isidiate thalline margin. Thalline exciple thick, paraplectenchymatous; proper exciple thin, of periclinally arranged hyphae; epithecium pale brown; hymenium colourless, 95-135 µm high, I+ blue; paraphyses simple, c. 1 µm thick at mid-level, the apical cells slightly swollen; hypothecium colourless. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical-clavate, the apex strongly thickened, the apical dome K/I+ pale blue, with a downwardly projecting K/I+ deep blue tubular structure. Ascospores 3-septate to submuriform, hyaline, ellipsoid, (15-)18-23(-25) x (6-)7-10(-12) µm. Photobiont cyanobacterial (Nostoc, the individual cells 4-6 µm wide, arranged in long chains). Spot tests: all negative. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
