Description: Thallus crustose, mostly endosubstratic and poorly evident, rarely emiendosubtratic and white, continuous or rimose. Apothecia black, sessile, very variable in outline (rounded to polygonal), usually confluent, with a raised, sinuous margin and a disc soon provided with a ring-formed umbo, becoming strongly irregular by the confluence of several umbos. Proper exciple thick, dark reddish brown, K+ intensifying reddish; epithecium olive-grey or olive-brown, K-, N+ red; hymenium colourless, 50-80(-100) µm high, I+ blue; paraphyses 1.5-3 µm thick at mid-level, bifurcate in upper part and rarely anastomosing, the apical cells slightly swollen, to 5 µm thick, with a sharpply delimited dark cap; hypothecium dark reddish brown, extending down into a sort of peduncle which is 200-600 µm deep. Asci 8-spored, clavate, fissitunicate, with a well-developed, I+ pale blue tholus surrounded by a I+ blue gelatinous layer, lacking an ocular chamber, Rhizocarpon-type. Ascospores 1-septate, constricted at septum, at first hyaline but soon turning dark brown to violet-black (paler near septum, darker at both ends), N+ red, oblong-ellipsoid, (10-)12-16(-18) x 6-9(-10) µm, with a distinct epispore and a thin, sometimes poorly visible, colourless gelatinous sheath. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: without lichen substances.
