Ramalina polymorpha (Lilj.) Ach.
Lichenogr. Univ.: 600, 1810. Basionym: Lichen calicaris var. polymorphus Lilj. - Utkast Svensk Flora: 426, 1798.
Synonyms: Ramalina grappae Sambo; Ramalina polymorpha var. emplecta (Ach.) Ach.; Ramalina polymorpha var. ligulata (Ach.) Ach.; Ramalina tinctoria auct. ital. p.p.
Description: Thallus fruticose, grey-yellowish when dry, dark grey-green when moist, of flattened, strap-shaped, 3-8 cm long, 1-6(-8) mm wide, ascending to prostrate laciniae, attached by a basal holdfast, often forming extensive colonies. Laciniae wrinkled, often longitudinally lacerated or dissected, tapering towards the end, with numerous elongate, raised pseudocyphellae bearing schizidia-like granules. Cortex 25-40 µm thick, the chondroid cylinder disrupted, chondroid strands in part traversing the medulla and in cross section appearing to be imbedded in it; medulla compact. Apothecia very rare, lecanorine, mostly terminal, but sometimes marginal in large specimens, with a cup-shaped, greenish disc and a minutely verrucose margin. Epithecium pale brownish-olive; hymenium and hypothecium colourless; paraphyses thick-walled, richly branched in upper part. Asci 8-spored, the apical dome K/I+ dark blue with a pale, conical-pointed apical cushion (axial mass), the wall I-, but the thin outer gel I+ blue, Bacidia-type. Ascospores 1-septate, hyaline, broadly ellipsoid, 12-16 x 4-6 µm. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: K-, C-, KC- or KC+ pale yellow (cortex only), P-. UV-. Chemistry: cortex with usnic acid; medulla without lichen substances.
