Lecidea ecrustacea (Arnold) Arnold
Verh. zool.-bot. Ges. Wien, 26: 359, 1876. Basionym: Lecidella polycarpa var. ecrustacea Anzi ex Arnold - Verh. zool.-bot. Ges. Wien, 18: 954, 1868.
Synonyms: Lecidea complicata H. Magn.; Lecidea lactea var. ecrustacea (Arnold) Clauzade & Cl. Roux; Lecidea pseudopilati (Vain.) Vain.
Description: Thallus endosubstratic, not evident or reduced to a few thin granules around the apothecia. Medullary hyphae I+ deep blue (reaction difficult to observe). Apothecia lecideine, black, with a flat to slightly convex disc, and a thick, wavy proper margin. Proper exciple blue-black in outer part, paler with a violet tinge within, filled with crystals reacting K+ yellow slowly turning red; epithecium green-black; hymenium colourless, (30-)40-55(-65) µm high, I+ blue; paraphyses coherent, c. 3.5 µm thick; hypothecium brown, K+ reddish brown. Asci 8-spored, narrowly clavate, thick-walled, with a K/I+ pale blue tholus and a strongly amyloid, thin apical cushion, surrounded by a I+ blue outer layer, Lecidea-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid, (8-)11-13(-15) x 5-6(-7) µm, 1.8-2.4 times as long as wide. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: crystals in exciple K+ yellow turning red, P+ pale yellow. Chemistry: apothecia (exciple) with norstictic acid.
