Lecidea fuliginosa Taylor
in Mackay, Fl. Hibern.: 131, 1836.
Synonyms: Biatora conglomerata A. Massal.; Lecidea confusa Nyl.; Psora conglomerata (A. Massal.) Körb.; Psora fuliginosa (Taylor) Stein; Psora koerberi A. Massal.; Toninia confusa (Nyl.) Boistel
Description: Thallus crustose, episubstratic, verrucose-areolate, of brown to dark brown (green when wet), often shiny, 0.5-2(-3) mm wide, 0.5-1.5 mm thick, convex to subglobose, contiguous areoles forming small pillows which are rather loosely attached to the rock. Medulla white, I-. Apothecia lecideine, black, 0.4-0.8(-1.2) mm across, adnate to sessile, with a rapidly convex disc and a soon excluded proper margin. Proper exciple thin, black to dark brown, of radiating hyphae, the marginal cells 6-8 µm wide; epithecium brown, K-; hymenium colourless or pale brown, 30-40 µm high; paraphyses coherent, sparingly branched and anastomosing, the apical cells up to 6 µm wide, with a dark cap; hypothecium dark brown, very thick and often substipitate. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical-clavate, with a K/I+ blue outer coat and a K/I+ uniformly blue apical dome, Catillaria-type. Ascospores 1-celled, hyaline, ellipsoid to subfusiform, 7-10(-12) x 4-6 µm. Pycnidia dark, immersed. Conidia thread-like, curved. Photobiont chlorococcoid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-, UV-. Chemistry: thallus without lichen substances.
