Fungal Divers., 49: 53, 2011. Basionym: Lichen latebrarum Ach. - Lichenogr. Suec. Prodr.: 7, 1799.
Synonyms: Crocynia albissima B. de Lesd.; Crocynia fragilissima Hue; Crocynia hueana B. de Lesd.; Crocynia latebrarum (Ach.) Vain.; Lecanactis latebrarum (Ach.) Arnold; Lepra candida auct. p.p.; Lepraria latebrarum Ach.
Description: Thallus crustose to subleprose, episubstratic, grey-white, sometimes pale brown- or pink-violet tinged, composed of irregular aggregations of soredia and hyphae which are heavily incrusted by crystals visible under polarized light, forming up to 5 mm thick and to 1 cm wide, soft, cottony, convex cushions which usually merge, covering much larger surfaces; prothallus visible only in young, thinner thalli, usually whitish to pale brown. Medulla of colourless hyphae densely covered in plate-like crystals visible under polarized light. Apothecia and pycnidia not known. Photobiont trentepohlioid. Spot tests: thallus K-, C-, KC-, P-; medulla and soralia UV+ pale blue. Chemistry: lepraric acid (major), plus variable amounts of roccellic acid, and ‘Latebrarum-unknown’.
